Mihaly SlocombeWeather House is a bespoke home for a young, nature-loving family on a quintessentially compact Northcote block.
Our clients Claire and Brent cherished the character of their century-old worker's cottage but required more considered space and flexibility in their home. Claire and Brent are camping enthusiasts, and in response their house is a love letter to the outdoors: a rich, durable environment infused with the grounded ambience of being in nature.
From the street, the dark cladding of the sensitive rear extension echoes the existing cottage!s roofline, becoming a subtle shadow of the original house in both form and tone. As you move through the home, the double-height extension invites the climate and native landscaping inside at every turn. The light-bathed lounge, dining room and kitchen are anchored around, and seamlessly connected to, a versatile outdoor living area. A double-sided fireplace embedded into the house’s rear wall brings warmth and ambience to the lounge, and inspires a campfire atmosphere in the back yard.
Championing tactility and durability, the material palette features polished concrete floors, blackbutt timber joinery and concrete brick walls. Peach and sage tones are employed as accents throughout the lower level, and amplified upstairs where sage forms the tonal base for the moody main bedroom. An adjacent private deck creates an additional tether to the outdoors, and houses planters and trellises that will decorate the home’s exterior with greenery.
From the tactile and textured finishes of the interior to the surrounding Australian native garden that you just want to touch, the house encapsulates the feeling of being part of the outdoors; like Claire and Brent are camping at home. It is a tribute to Mother Nature, Weather House’s muse.
Haven Design and ConstructionOne functional challenge was that the home did not have a pantry. MCM closets were historically smaller than the walk-in closets and pantries of today. So, we printed out the home’s floorplan and began sketching ideas. The breakfast area was quite large, and it backed up to the primary bath on one side and it also adjoined the main hallway. We decided to reconfigure the large breakfast area by making part of it into a new walk-in pantry. This gave us the extra space we needed to create a new main hallway, enough space for a spacious walk-in pantry, and finally, we had enough space remaining in the breakfast area to add a cozy built-in walnut dining bench. Above the new dining bench, we designed and incorporated a geometric walnut accent wall to add warmth and texture.
Décor AidNew Yorkers are always on the prowl for innovative ways to make the most of the space they have. An upper east side couple, challenged with a slightly narrow L shaped apartment sought out Decor Aid’s help to make the most of their Manhattan condo. Paired with one of our senior designer, Kimberly P., we learned that the clients wanted a space that looked beautiful, comfortable and also packed with functionality for everyday living.
“Immediately upon seeing the space, I knew that we needed to create a narrative that allowed the design to control how you moved through the space,” reports Kimberly, senior interior designer.
After surveying each room and learning a bit more about their personal style, we started with the living room remodel. It was clear that the couple wanted to infuse mid-century modern into the design plan. Sourcing the Room & Board Jasper Sofa with its narrow arms and tapered legs, it offered the mid-century look, with the modern comfort the clients are used to. Velvet accent pillows from West Elm and Crate & Barrel add pops of colors but also a subtle touch of luxury, while framed pictures from the couple’s honeymoon personalize the space.
Moving to the dining room next, Kimberly decided to add a blue accent wall to emphasize the Horchow two piece Percussion framed art that was to be the focal point of the dining area. The Seno sideboard from Article perfectly accentuated the mid-century style the clients loved while providing much-needed storage space. The palette used throughout both rooms were very New York style, grays, blues, beiges, and whites, to add depth, Kimberly sourced decorative pieces in a mixture of different metals.

Moving into the bedroom renovation, our designer made sure to continue to stick to the client’s style preference while once again creating a personalized, warm and comforting space by including the photographs taken by the client’s father. The Avery bed added texture and complimented the other colors in the room, while a hidden drawer at the foot pulls out for attached storage, which thrilled the clients. A deco-inspired Faceted mirror from West Elm was a perfect addition to the bedroom due to the illusion of space it provides. The result was a bedroom that was full of mid-century design, personality, and area so they can freely move around.
The project resulted in the form of a layered mid-century modern design with touches of luxury but a space that can not only be lived in but serves as an extension of the people who live there. Our designer was able to take a very narrowly shaped Manhattan apartment and revamp it into a spacious home that is great for sophisticated entertaining or comfortably lazy nights in.
LAND DEVELOPMENT AND BUILDING, LLCThe Betty at Inglenook’s Pocket Neighborhoods is an open two-bedroom Cottage-style Home that facilitates everyday living on a single level. High ceilings in the kitchen, family room and dining nook make this a bright and enjoyable space for your morning coffee, cooking a gourmet dinner, or entertaining guests. Whether it’s the Betty Sue or a Betty Lou, the Betty plans are tailored to maximize the way we live. This is the dining space which is open to the kitchen and living areas.
Jessica Dauray Interiors/Elements Of StyleThis cozy nook exudes modern sophistication and warmth. The lucite chairs add an airy feel to the fruit woods of the floor and table. The built-in, floating banquette provides efficient and stylish seating to gather. The curves in the unique light fixture tie in with the oval shape of the table and help balance the angles in the bench and framed artwork.
F. D. Hodge InteriorsAn eclectic mix of period antique furnishings and accessories. A 19th c American Empire center table is paired with a set of 19th c Baltic elm wood dining chairs. The Russian Style chandelier is a modern reproduction. Framed engravings of intaglios flank the 19th c French arched mirror.

The style of the home is Japandi, with soft and warm minimalist design elements throughout.
Nicolle Tames Interior DesignsThe project was intended to integrate the classic and rustic style with some modern details to create a cozy and balanced space. Another request from the client was to use her two black Louis chairs in the design for a unique look.
We also searched for a balance of different materials such as wood, jute, metal, glass and cane.
Tristan Gary DesignsWe wanted to tie the bar into the kitchen so we created a built in bench (with storage) for the dining room area.
James and James FurnitureBuilt and finished by hand at James+James, the Violet Hardwood Round Table is a beautiful pedestal table for a dining room, kitchen or sunroom. It is handcrafted from solid hardwood.
Tru Form TinyDesigned by Malia Schultheis and built by Tru Form Tiny. This Tiny Home features Blue stained pine for the ceiling, pine wall boards in white, custom barn door, custom steel work throughout, and modern minimalist window trim in fir. This table folds down and away.
St. Pierre ConstructionDining room featuring light white oak flooring, custom built-in bench for additional seating, bookscases featuring wood shelves, horizontal shiplap walls, and a mushroom board ceiling.
